Press Statement:
The Zongo Peace Committee has received with deep sorrow and concern the news of the tragic shooting and killing of Chief Abdul-Malik Azenbe, the Ashanti Regional Kusasi Chief, at his residence at Asawasi F-Line near the community centre.
We wish to extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the Kusasi fraternity, and the entire community. This act of violence is not only regrettable but also a threat to the peace and security we all strive to maintain.
We urge the general public to remain calm and allow the police and security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.
At this point, we caution against hasty conclusions or attempts to link the incident to ethnic conflict, as there is no evidence supporting such claims.
We encourage the Ghana Police Service to act swiftly and professionally to bring the perpetrators to justice and restore public confidence.
While the Peace Committee remains committed to its mandate of promoting dialogue and preventing violence, we must also state that our efforts have been greatly hampered by the lack of adequate logistics and resources.
We believe that with proper support, early intervention could have been possible in this situation.
As the committee had already met with the two feuding factions some few weeks ago at the regional level, upon the directive of the Ashanti Regional Imam to act as a proactive measure in restoring peace and harmony in the region.
However, we call on all stakeholders, including government and civil society, to support peacebuilding structures at all levels.
Peace is a shared responsibility. Let us all work together to preserve it.
Signed:
Sheikh Muhammad Ridwan
( Chairman , Ashanti Regional Zongo Peace and Reconciliation Committee )
