National Chief Imam Mourns Helicopter Crash Victims

His Eminence the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has extended heartfelt condolences to the Government and the Ghana Armed Forces following the tragic helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, that claimed eight lives, including top government officials.

Among the deceased are Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence; Alhaji Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology; Alhaji Mohammed Muniru, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Dr Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC; and Mr Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate. Also perished were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Describing the crash as “a national disaster of collective grief,” the Chief Imam, in a statement, called on Ghanaians to unite in the face of this calamity, transcending political, ethnic, and religious divisions.

“We must remain resilient and bound by our shared humanity during this divine trial,” His Eminence said, offering prayers for the departed souls and strength for the bereaved families.

He urged the Government and the Military High Command not to despair, but rather to “seize this moment to enhance the safety, security, and capacity of our air fleet.”

The Imam also appealed to the media to “exercise restraint and uphold ethical standards” in covering the incident, noting the importance of respecting cultural sensitivities.

His message concluded with a prayer for national healing and divine mercy for the deceased.
