Ghana Mourns Loss of Eight Citizens in Tragic Helicopter Crash

Ghana is in a state of mourning following a tragic helicopter crash in Adansi Akrofuom that claimed the lives of eight Ghanaians, including senior government officials and military personnel.

The incident, which occurred Wednesday, August 6, has shaken the nation and prompted calls for answers and accountability.

The Victims
The crash claimed the lives of:

  • Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah – Minister for Defence
  • Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed – Member of Parliament for Tamale Central and Minister for Environment, Science and Technology
  • Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna – Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
  • Samuel Sarpong – Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)
  • Samuel Aboagye – Deputy Director General of NADMO
  • Squadron Leader Peter Anala, Ghana Air Force
  • Flying Officer Twum Ampadu, Ghana Air Force
  • Sergeant Ernest Addo, Ghana Air Force

President’s Address to the Nation
In a somber televised address on Thursday, August 7, President John Mahama expressed his sorrow over the national tragedy.

“This is a deep personal loss,” the President said.

He also extended condolences to the families of the victims and assured the country that a full investigation is underway.

Investigation Underway
The Ghana Armed Forces has commenced a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the cause of the crash.

An investigative board of enquiry has been established, and both the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder have been successfully recovered.

Officials say the findings will be made public upon conclusion of the investigation.

Memorial and Funeral Arrangements
A national memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 9, at 5 p.m. at the forecourt of the State House. This event will serve as an evening of reflection in memory of the deceased.

Books of condolence will be open from Sunday, August 10, to Thursday, August 14, at:

  • The Ministry of Defence
  • The Ministry of Environment, Science, and Technology
  • The Ghana Armed Forces Headquarters
  • NDC headquarters
  • NADMO Headquarters

A state funeral, open to the public, will be held at Black Star Square on Friday, August 15, to honor the eight individuals.

A Nation Pays Tribute
President Mahama described the victims as “dedicated public servants, intellectuals, and patriots.”

“These gallant men each served Ghana with distinction,” he said.
“Let our words be of comfort, our actions be of kindness, and our unity be the tribute we offer to those whose lives have been lost.
“The entire nation stands in solidarity with the families of the deceased, honoring their sacrifice and service to Ghana,” he added.
