Ghanaian football fans are going wild after the 2026 FIFA World Cup draw, which has placed the Black Stars in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.
The group stage promises to be a thrilling ride, with Ghana facing off against football powerhouses England and Croatia, as well as Panama.
Ghana’s previous encounter with England ended in a 1-1 draw back in 2011, and now they’ll face them again in the World Cup. The Three Lions are considered one of the favorites to win the tournament, with a squad packed with Premier League stars. Croatia, on the other hand, brings a wealth of experience and tournament pedigree, having been finalists in 2018 and semi-finalists in 2022. Panama, making their second World Cup appearance, will be looking to cause an upset. The Central American team is known for their physicality and disciplined play, which could make them a dark horse in the group.

Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan described the group as “tricky” but expressed confidence in the team’s ability to advance. “It’s a very tricky group, and all the teams will be fighting to qualify. Everyone back home will want Ghana to advance, and we will do our very best to reach the next stage,” Gyan said.
Ghanaian football fans are echoing Gyan’s optimism, taking to social media to express their excitement and support for the Black Stars. “This is an easy group for Ghana to excel,” wrote @GhanaFan4Life on Twitter. “The Black Stars will shine in this group,” added @BlackStarsSupporter.
Black Stars coach Otto Addo believes they can qualify for the next round despite being drawn in a “tough group”. “It’s a tough group, but it’s doable. There are worse groups, to be honest. I’m happy, especially for our fans on the East Coast of the USA, that they’ll be able to see us. So, for this I’m very happy. If we have a good start against Panama from there, we can continue to [build on that],” Addo said.
Addo emphasised the team’s target is to beat every opponent starting from the very first group stage match. “We want to win every match; this is for sure. Once we get a good start, then anything is possible. However, he cautioned against underrating Panama, who are currently ranked 30th in the world. “On a good day, I know we can beat everyone, but I also know we can lose against all of those teams, also Panama, if we underrate them.”

Otto Addo is indeed the coach leading Ghana to the 2026 World Cup, and he’s made history by qualifying the Black Stars for two consecutive World Cups – 2022 in Qatar and 2026 in North America. Addo’s leadership has been instrumental in Ghana’s success, with his tactical philosophy and man-management approach earning praise from football analysts.
The Black Stars will face England, Croatia, and Panama in the group stage, with their first match likely to be against Panama. Ghana’s fans are expecting a strong performance from their team, with key players like Mohammed Kudus, Jordan Ayew, Antoine Semenyo, and Thomas Partey leading the charge.
The group stage fixtures are as follows:
- Ghana vs. Panama
- Ghana vs. England
- Ghana vs. Croatia

Ghana has a strong World Cup pedigree, having reached the quarterfinals in 2010 and the last 16 in 2006. The new World Cup format introduces a Round of 32, slightly improving Ghana’s chances of progression. With a strong squad and the right strategy, Ghana could surprise everyone and make it to the knockout stages.
