UniMAC Eye Launch Signals New Era of Student Journalism and Campus Engagement

A new chapter in student journalism has begun at the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC) following the official launch of UniMAC Eye, a student-led media platform designed to amplify student voices, improve campus communication, and provide practical industry experience for aspiring media professionals.

The platform was unveiled during a ceremony at the University’s South Legon Campus Auditorium, where students, faculty members, media practitioners, and invited guests gathered to witness the launch and the unveiling of its official logo.

Founded by student leader Hafiz Larry Alhassan, UniMAC Eye aims to become the University’s premier platform for campus news, storytelling, student engagement, and professional development.

Giving Students a Voice

Speaking at the launch, Alhassan said the idea behind UniMAC Eye was born out of the need to give greater visibility to the many achievements and activities taking place within the University community.

“For far too long, many remarkable stories within our university community have remained untold,” he said.

He noted that students continue to excel in academics, entrepreneurship, research, leadership, and innovation, yet many of these accomplishments receive little public recognition.

“Every student has a story worth telling. Every achiever deserves recognition. Every voice deserves to be heard,” he added.

According to him, UniMAC Eye will serve as a platform to document, celebrate, and share the stories, concerns, and successes of students across the University.

Practical Industry Training

Beyond news reporting, Alhassan described the initiative as a practical learning environment that will equip students with real-world media experience before graduation.

“The UniMAC Eye project is not just about amplifying student voices. It is supposed to give students the practical experience they need to transition well into the industry,” he explained.

He said students who join the platform will gain hands-on experience in journalism, broadcasting, photography, videography, graphic design, editing, content creation, and social media management.

According to him, such practical exposure will help bridge the gap between classroom instruction and industry expectations, giving graduates a competitive advantage in Ghana’s media landscape.

“Once you go for internship, you already have experience. You are not going to start from scratch,” he noted.

Improving Campus Communication

The founder also highlighted communication gaps within the University, explaining that many students often miss important information on programmes, opportunities, leadership activities, and events due to the absence of a dedicated student-focused media outlet.

“Today, we unveil a movement,” he told participants.

“A movement that seeks to solve the problem of communication within the UniMAC community.”

He said the platform will serve as a bridge connecting students, management, faculty, student leaders, clubs, associations, and alumni.

A Logo That Reflects the Mission

One of the highlights of the ceremony was the unveiling of the official UniMAC Eye logo.

Presenting the logo, Clemencia Apaga explained that the visual identity was intentionally designed around the symbolism of an eye to represent vigilance, truth, awareness, and objective reporting.

“Our slogan, Eyes on Campus, Voice for Students, reflects our commitment to observing, documenting, and telling the stories that matter to the student community,” she said.

She added that incorporating the official UniMAC emblem into the design signifies the platform’s identity as a student initiative rooted in the University community.

Graphic designer Dogbatse Atsu Eugene, who developed the logo, revealed that the final design emerged after extensive brainstorming and collaboration.

“We explored several concepts before arriving at a design that truly reflects both UniMAC and the idea of an eye,” he said.

Looking Ahead

Officially declaring the platform launched, Alhassan expressed appreciation to everyone who contributed to bringing the vision to life.

“I’m glad I’m not doing this alone. I’m doing this with all of you seated here,” he said.

He disclosed that even before its official launch, UniMAC Eye had already generated more than 10,000 views across its digital platforms, including YouTube, TikTok, and Facebook.

Looking ahead, the platform plans to expand its content offerings, recruit more student contributors, and establish collaborations with media organisations to further strengthen students’ professional development.

He also encouraged interested students to join the initiative.

“This is an avenue for us as students to learn and practise whatever we are taught in the classroom,” he said.

Students Welcome the Initiative

Students who attended the launch described UniMAC Eye as a timely and innovative initiative that has the potential to transform communication across the University while providing valuable opportunities for practical learning.

Many pledged their support for the platform and expressed interest in contributing their skills toward its growth.

As the event came to a close, organisers reaffirmed their commitment to building an enduring student institution that will continue serving future generations.

“Today is not just about a logo reveal,” Alhassan concluded.

“It is about building an institution that can outlive all of us seated in this room.”

With its official launch complete, UniMAC Eye now begins its journey with the ambition of becoming the trusted source for campus news and the enduring voice of UniMAC students.
