The Ministry of Sports has announced significant cost savings in the approved budgets for Ghana’s Black Stars ahead of their 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Mali.
At a media briefing, Sports Minister Hon. Kofi Adams made the disclosure, following President John Dramani Mahama’s directive to ensure transparency in national team spending.
“For the away game against Chad on September 4, the GFA’s initial estimate of $1.24 million was trimmed to $856,890—saving $382,200,” Adams revealed.
“Similarly, the home fixture against Mali on September 8 saw a cut from $814,150 to $463,600, saving another $350,550.”These savings were achieved by reducing imprest allocations, cutting administrative and transport costs, and restructuring player and staff bonuses.
“All budget lines have been scrutinised in the interest of the taxpayer, ensuring the essentials for team performance are maintained,” the Minister stated.
According to the Minister, accommodation, meals, and medical support remained fully funded. A phased bonus payment plan was also agreed upon between the government and the GFA, tying bonuses to team performance.
Adams praised the Ghana Football Association, technical team, and players for cooperating with the Ministry’s cost-conscious approach.
“Their understanding made this possible,” he added.
The combined savings from both fixtures amount to over $732,750.
This budget transparency, the Minister emphasised, reflects the government’s commitment to fiscal discipline while ensuring the national team is adequately prepared.
