The family of Ahmed Hussein-Suale, an investigative journalist brutally murdered six years ago, is urging the new government to reopen investigations into his death and ensure justice is served.

Ahmed Suale, a close associate of renowned journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, was killed on January 16, 2019, in the aftermath of his involvement in an explosive exposé on corruption in African football.

Months before his murder, Kennedy Agyapong, a prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and then Member of Parliament for Assin North, publicly revealed Ahmed’s identity on live television. Agyapong displayed his photographs and called for attacks against him, actions widely condemned as reckless and potentially endangering the journalist’s life.

Despite numerous calls for accountability, police and investigative agencies under the Akufo-Addo administration failed to provide substantial updates or progress on the investigation into Ahmed’s death. The lack of resolution has left his family disheartened, but determined to keep the case alive.

Speaking to Hafiz TV, Ahmed’s elder brother, Kamil Tahir, expressed the family’s anguish:
“Even if Ahmed’s killers were arrested and sentenced today, it wouldn’t bring him back or erase our pain. But our fight for justice is about protecting the many hardworking journalists in this country. If Ahmed doesn’t get justice, what hope is there for the safety of the media in Ghana?”

The family hopes the recent change in government will refocus attention on the case. They remain adamant that justice for Ahmed is essential not only for their healing but also for safeguarding press freedom in Ghana.

“Six years is far too long without answers. We implore the new administration to prioritise this issue, find the perpetrators, and bring them to justice,” Kamil added.
