Seventeen Assembly Members File Nomination Forms for Hajia Amina Adam Ahead of NDC Ayawaso East Primaries

A total of 17 Assembly Members in the Ayawaso East constituency have jointly financed and submitted the nomination forms of *Hajia Amina Adam, enabling her to contest the *National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries scheduled for 7 February, ahead of the constituency’s by-election.

Hajia Amina Adam, the widow of the late Member of Parliament Mahama Naser Toure, is being backed by the group as part of efforts to sustain what they describe as a legacy of service, strong political organisation, and development-oriented leadership in Ayawaso East.

Speaking on behalf of the Assembly Members, Ismail Abdul Razak said the decision followed wide consultations with party stakeholders and community leaders within the constituency.

According to him, discussions were also held with Hajia Amina Adam to confirm her willingness to step forward and accept the leadership responsibility, should she secure the party’s nomination.

Mr Abdul Razak said she had assured the group of her commitment to working with party structures, grassroots members, and relevant stakeholders to strengthen the NDC in Ayawaso East.

The Assembly Members, he added, believe Hajia Amina Adam’s experience, dedication, and understanding of constituency dynamics position her well to continue the development-focused leadership associated with her late husband.

While the filing of her nomination marks the formal start of her candidature, Hajia Amina Adam is *not expected to personally engage in campaign activities at this stage, as she is currently observing *idda.

Idda is a mandatory Islamic mourning period observed by a widow following the death of her husband, during which she is required to remain in seclusion, refrain from public engagements, and devote herself to prayer and reflection, in accordance with Islamic teachings.

During her declaration of intent, Hajia Amina Adam stated:
“I am currently observing my idda, and I wish to clearly state that this sacred obligation will be fully respected. My decision to contest and the activities around it will be carried out in a manner that does not compromise my idda or the teachings of Islam.”

Supporters say party structures and representatives will handle necessary engagements on her behalf during this period, in line with party rules and religious considerations.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission has scheduled the by-election for Tuesday, 3 March 2026, following the vacancy created by the death of the sitting MP.

The NDC primaries are expected to shape the party’s strategy as it prepares for the by-election in the closely watched Ayawaso East constituency.
[3:47 AM, 1/25/2026] HON. Hafiz: ## Six Aspirants Pick Nomination Forms for NDC Ayawaso East Parliamentary Primary

Six aspirants have picked nomination forms to contest the *National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary in Ayawaso East, as the party prepares to select a candidate ahead of the *3 March by-election.

The aspirants include *Mohammed Ramme, the NDC Constituency Chairman, **Baba Jamal, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, **Dr Yakubu Azindow, **Hajia Amina Adam, widow of the late Member of Parliament **Mahama Naser Toure, **Abdul Salaam Mohammed Daaru, a youth leader within the party, and *Najib Mohammed Sani.

The development was confirmed by the NDC’s *Deputy Director of Elections and IT, *Rashid Tanko, in an interview on Monday.

“At the close of nominations today, six persons picked nomination forms to contest the upcoming primaries. The wife of the late MP was the last person to pick nominations today. It is going to be a very interesting contest,” he said, adding that the filing of nomination forms would take place on *Tuesday, 27 January, followed by vetting on *28 January.

The parliamentary primary is being organised to elect a candidate to replace *Mahama Naser Toure, who died on *4 January 2026 after a short illness.

The entry of *Mohammed Ramme, popularly known as *Alabi, has added a new dimension to the contest. As the constituency chairman, he has played a central role in organising the party at the local level and has previously been associated with campaign coordination within the constituency.

Political observers note that his decision to contest introduces a significant shift in the dynamics of the race, particularly as he had been closely involved in party mobilisation efforts following the death of the sitting MP.

Meanwhile, *Hajia Amina Adam, one of the early aspirants, is currently observing *idda, the Islamic mourning period required of widows, which limits her public engagements during this period. In earlier statements, she has indicated that all campaign-related activities would be conducted in a manner consistent with Islamic teachings.

The growing list of aspirants reflects heightened political interest in Ayawaso East, a constituency widely regarded as a stronghold of the NDC, where the party has traditionally enjoyed strong electoral support.

The Electoral Commission has scheduled the by-election for Tuesday, 3 March 2026, following the vacancy created by the death of the sitting MP. The outcome of the NDC primary is expected to play a decisive role in determining the next parliamentary representative for the constituency.
