GAMA President Commends Government's Reduction of Hajj Fares and Proposes Reforms for Improved Operations

The Ghana Association of Muslim Accountants (GAMA) has praised the government for lowering Hajj fares from GH¢75,000 to GH¢62,000.

At the 2025 Accountants Conference, GAMA President Mr. Yusif Geoffrey expressed gratitude to the government for fulfilling its campaign promise to make the pilgrimage more affordable for Ghanaian Muslims.

The conference was part of the Accountancy Week Celebration, which began with an Islamic Thanksgiving service led by His Eminence Sheikh Osaman Nuhu Sharubutu, the National Chief Imam, at the National Mosque in Kanda, Accra.

“We appreciate the government’s efforts in negotiating with Saudi authorities, which have resulted in Ghana offering the lowest Hajj fare in the Sub-Saharan region,” said Mr. Geoffrey.

However, he emphasised the necessity of improving the management of Hajj operations. He noted that “the expertise of the accounting profession in financial management and oversight could play a crucial role in enhancing the process.”

To facilitate this, Mr. Geoffrey proposed establishing a transparent and accountable system for managing Hajj funds, which would prevent mismanagement and ensure that the needs of pilgrims are met.

He also suggested that the government publish the fare announcement along with a detailed breakdown of the various components of the Hajj fares for prospective pilgrims. This would enhance transparency in the Hajj process.

Furthermore, he called for the implementation of effective monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to ensure that the needs of pilgrims are addressed and that the pilgrimage proceeds smoothly.

Additionally, Mr. Geoffrey recommended involving professional bodies, such as GAMA, in financial oversight and planning to enhance accountability and efficiency.
