Sakafia Islamic Senior High School, a public school in Kumasi, has won the 2025 Zayed Sustainability Prize in the Global High School category for sub-Saharan Africa. The award ceremony took place in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

The school received a cash prize of $150,000 for its innovative aquaponics project, which aims to address food insecurity while promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

With this funding, Sakafia Islamic Senior High School, home to over 3,000 students, plans to develop urban aquaponics systems to enhance food security and nutrition in the community.

Mr. Mohamed Shahid, Principal of Sakafia Islamic Senior High School, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “The Zayed Sustainability Prize will not only transform our school’s approach to sustainability but will also empower our students and community with the tools and knowledge to create lasting positive change.”

The $150,000 award will help the school integrate the aquaponics system into its curriculum, providing approximately 50 students with hands-on experience in sustainable farming practices. Additionally, it will directly benefit over 1,000 people by improving access to fresh produce and offering training workshops.
