According to Samuel Nartey George, Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation, the country’s three main telecommunications networks will soon see increases in data bundles.
At a press conference on Tuesday, June 10th, the Minister said that the decision comes after months of stakeholder consultations to create a plan to guarantee Ghanaians can afford data pricing.
Mr. Nartey George mentioned that the following bundle changes will go into effect on July 1, 2025, after considerable consultation with the CEOs of Telecel, Airtel Ghana, and MTN Ghana:
“Airtel Tigo Ghana – 10% increase on all data offerings, Telecel – 10% increase in all data bundles currently offered by the network, MTN – 15% increase in all data bundles currently offered by the network.”
In his remarks, the Minister accused the previous Akufo-Addo administration of mismanaging the sector for the last eight years.
“The sector has experienced a sharp decline in growth and investment, and the regulator has essentially been on autopilot. It is, therefore, shocking to see proponents of the previous government now being the loudest critics of the challenges they created. I am told this is part of a carefully curated art of dark politics called ‘jadam’.”
The Minister also emphasised the need for telecom providers to raise the calibre of their services. During the upcoming quarter, from July to September, he revealed that all three networks’ CEOs have been ordered to make significant investments in their infrastructure to improve service delivery.
